Holy Unction
Anointing with oil for the healing of soul and body, in the name of the Lord.
Christ came to the world to “bear the infirmities” of men. One of the signs of his divine messiahship was to heal the sick. The power of healing remains in the Church, because Christ Himself remains in the Church through the Holy Spirit.
The sacrament of Holy Unction is the Church’s specific prayer for the healing of mind, body and soul, and for forgiveness. If the faith of the believers is strong enough, and if it is the will of God, there is every reason to believe that the Lord can heal those who are unwell.
“Is any among you sick? Let him call for the presbyters of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up” (James 5:14–15). The words of the Apostle are still, today, the words of our practice.
The service of Holy Unction may take place within the Church or in the home. For a home unction, please have ready a small bowl of flour, seven beeswax candles, an icon, incense, and a vigil lamp (candili). The priest will bring the rest. To book a home Holy Unction, please contact the parish office.
